MP3 Home Recording

In 2004 I was given a strat by my wife and daughter for my birthday and started messing around with guitars again. Not in a position to buy a decent amp or mic for that matter, I decided one day to download backing tracks from
Olav Torvund's Guitar Site
.
This is an excellent site for getting backing tracks especially blues backing track. I used a program called Cakewalk Guiatar Tracks 2.0 and put the backing track in. It consited of drums, bass and keyboards. I then recorded a second track playing electric slide in open 'E' tunning for the first half of the song. The third track laid down was playing normal lead guitar in normal tunning for the second part of the song. The forth track was my very first attempt ever at vocals.

For both tracks of the guitar I simply put a cheap practice amp on the computer desk, stood one of those very cheap mic's that you get with every computer in front of it and turned the volume down but the distortion right up. I then mixed it all down to MP3. I made one big mistake. I started singing at the very beginning to get my key but by the time I realised it sounded bad I had dumped the original Cakewalk recording and it was too late to take it off. One good thing about doing this is that it allowed me to hear myself sing for the first time and gave a bit more confidence to do it on stage.

All done in one take on a Sunday afternoon whilst "her in doors" was out with our son. All alone so nobody could see me make a fool of myself.
